Christmas parade canceled in Cumming
Run its course, organizers say
Parade

CUMMING — Christmas is still coming, but there will be no parade in Cumming this year.

Officials with the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce confirmed Tuesday there would be no holiday procession along Market Place Boulevard.

“This would have been the 10th year,” said Anna Barlow, who has coordinated past Cumming Christmas Parades for the chamber. “It’s run for nine years, and we feel like its run its course.”

Typically held on the first Saturday of December, and often in chilly and wet conditions, the parade had become a part of Christmas kickoff along the bustling retail corridor in Cumming.

City Administrator Gerald Blackburn said Cumming leaders were aware of the situation, but deferred comment to the chamber officials, saying it was primarily their decision.

According to Barlow, the chamber may look into holding the parade at a different location in the future.

“We’ll maybe relook at things … and see if there is something different that we can do and maybe a location change might be something that we want to look at,” Barlow said.

The two other events of the Market Place Christmas celebration, the Jingle Jog 5K and Northside-Forsyth’s Celebration of Lights, will still be held.

The Celebration of Lights is set for 6 p.m. Dec. 4 , a Friday. The festival culminates with the lighting of a 65-foot tall tree adorned in some 15,000 lights atop the hospital. The Jingle Jog follows at 8:30 a.m. Dec. 5.

“The Jingle Jog will still be taking place that Saturday morning and that goes to benefit the Forsyth County Community Connection,” Barlow said. “… Those will still be happening and those are still great community events.”
