Forsyth County residents may soon have another dining option.

Janet Heard with the county’s planning and development department confirmed Monday that officials with Cracker Barrel Old Country Store and Restaurant have applied to build a site near Cumming.

“They have completed the first stage of the process,” Heard said. “They have submitted an application for a site development permit to construct an 8,960-square-foot restaurant on Buford Highway at the intersection with [Ga.] 400.”

The two structures on the site formerly housed PR’s Barbecue and Mrs. Winner’s Chicken & Biscuits. Both eateries have been closed for some time.

Heard said it was “her understanding” that Cracker Barrel plans to raze the buildings to make room for the restaurant and country store location.

Eventually, company officials will also have to apply for a building permit.

However, the plans most likely will not have to go before the planning board or county commission since the site is properly zoned, Heard said.

“It’s just a matter of getting all the plans approved with the different county departments,” she said.

Heard didn’t know the exact time frame for opening the restaurant.

“Right now the ball’s in their court,” she said, explaining that county employees had reviewed the site development application and returned it with some suggestions.

“It depends on how long they can get those comments and revisions addressed,” Heard said. “We’re anxious for them to get here.”
