The Dressbarn clothing store in Cumming has started the liquidation process as part of the longtime women’s clothing company’s decision to end its retail operations.

Liquidation started on Friday, Nov. 1. The store, located at 533 Lakeland Plaza, will close by the end of December.

The company announced in May that it will close its approximately 650 retail locations due to grim financial conditions.

“This decision was difficult, but necessary, as the Dressbarn chain has not been operating at an acceptable level of profitability is today’s retail environment,” Dressbarn Chief Financial Officer Steven Taylor said in a statement released by the company.

Dressbarn said store associates would be notified about specific store closures and provided with transition support.

Dressbarn began as a single store in Connecticut in 1962 to offer “fashion at a value” for women who were entering the workforce. The company grew to operate approximately 650 stores across the country with approximately 6,800 employees.
