CUMMING — A local civic organization is working to support young cancer patients this April with help from an area branch of a breakfast chain.

Starting Saturday and continuing through the month, the Defeat Cancer Campaign will be held at the IHOP at 920 Market Place Boulevard in Cumming.

The campaign is the result of a partnership between the restaurant, the Forsyth-Cumming Optimist Club and the Justin Adams Farmer’s Ins. Agency.

Anyone can go to the restaurant and make a pledge of $1 or more and sign a card that will be displayed on site.

Cancer is the disease that kills the most children, taking more lives than asthma, diabetes, cystic fibrosis and AIDS combined, said Howard Shames of the Optimist Club.

Optimist International established the Childhood Cancer Campaign in the hopes of “bringing greater service to affected families, helping to fund research and supporting projects at the local community level.”

The Forsyth-Cumming Optimist Club has been supporting young cancer patients and their families in the community for 10 years through local service projects.

The local chapter is a Partner in Education with the school system and, along with the Sawnee-Cumming Optimist Club, puts on the largest oratory contest in the country.

It also holds a yearly track and field event for elementary-aged children with the county parks and recreation department, has a honor student of the month program and provides thousands of dollars in college scholarships.
