German grocery chain Lidl wants to build a 36,000-square-foot store on Dawsonville Highway across from Trinity Baptist Church.
Lidl US Operations LLC has applied to rezone almost 7 acres of land at 1010 Dawsonville Highway, southeast of Beechwood Boulevard, to the Gainesville Planning and Appeals Board. The property is now two lots with mixed commercial zoning, and Lidl hopes to rezone it to the general business zone.
The lot would have 172 parking spaces and two loading bays, according to the application, and Lidl expects to employ between 25 and 50 people.
There would be a 300-foot right-turn lane off of Dawsonville Highway into the business, and no stoplight would be added to the intersection.
A traffic study has already been performed for the development by Duluth-based Wolverton Inc., which concluded that the road is already inadequate for the amount of traffic traveling in the area during peak hours before the addition of the store.
If approved, Lidl would join a busy corridor along Dawsonville Highway, with multiple shopping centers near the nearby McEver Road intersection and the newer North Lake Square near the Ahaluna Drive intersection.
The Gainesville planning board is scheduled to consider the application at its Aug. 8 meeting, with Gainesville City Council getting final say on the application at a later date. A representative of Lidl didn’t respond to a request for information.
