CUMMING — The National Barbecue Cup: Que’n in Cumming is returning this weekend to the Cumming Fairgrounds.

The event, which organizer Randall Bowman said continues to grow in stature, will run from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

“It’s a Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned Georgia state championship,” Bowman said. “It’s the largest in Georgia and the fourth largest in the country. You’re going to have 125 to 150 teams competing for $25,000 in prizes.”

Teams will be judged for the best chicken, beef brisket, ribs and pork butt or shoulder, though attendees can also cast a vote.

“You can win each individual category, then the combined score that is best for all four categories will win best overall,” Bowman said  “There’s a people’s choice on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and we have Brunswick stew and chicken wings.

“There’s also people’s choice available on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and that’s pork.”

Citing what he said was a “lack of local support” last year, Bowman had hinted the event might relocate in 2015. It didn’t.

“It is here this year,” he said. “[Next year] will be totally up to the [organizing] committee and what they can get local businesses and everybody to commit to as far as partnerships.”

According to Bowman, it costs about $100,000 to put on the event.

Tickets for this year’s festivities are $7 at the gate. Tasting tickets for the people’s choice are $5 for five.

The event also will feature vendors selling food, arts and crafts and other items, along with a kid’s zone, music and raffles.
