New Goodwill in Cumming store hiring, no opening date scheduled
Construction appears finished; has had inspection issues

It appears the majority of construction is completed for a new Goodwill store in Cumming, but no opening date has been set.

A new Goodwill of North Georgia store at the southwest intersection of Larry Mulkey Memorial Road and Atlanta Highway (Hwy. 9 south) is set to serve Forsyth County after the closing of a previous store in nearby Merchants Square Shopping Center in 2015.

Officials with Goodwill of North Georgia, which runs locations in north Georgia and metro Atlanta, said no new information or planned opening date has been released but that the store has begun hiring.

It appears the building has had some issues with inspections from the Forsyth County Planning and Community Development Department.

Per county records, the store passed its final inspection on June 19 but had past issues with inspections. The building was charged $325, including $25 for a framing violation, $75 for two violations with the monolithic slab, $75 for plumbing underground and $140 for rebar/ground work.

Work on the monolithic slab, which appears to be the final violation to be fixed, was approved on May 11.

The company has been charged almost $19,000 in total county fees.

An “as-built” checklist for the store was submitted on July 17 but has not received approval.

In an email, a county employee said the store “had problems following the required special inspections” and, in some cases, “plans were not followed or work was covered prior to inspection.”
