SOUTH FORSYTH — It’s that time again. Ping pong for charity at an iconic south Forsyth restaurant.

The 37th biannual Ping Pong Tournament, organized by Norman’s Landing, is set for Tuesday and Wednesday. All proceeds will go to the Northeast Georgia Chapter of the American Red Cross.

The first night will feature a singles tournament with single elimination. The second night will feature a doubles tournament with double elimination.

Each bracket costs $20 per person and participants receive a hat or T-shirt. Winners will receive lunch or dinner for two at Norman’s Landing.

Bill Norman, owner of the restaurant, said the first two games of the World Series will be on, so “come watch the game, play ping pong and have fun.”

He said he usually sees about 30 people sign up for the singles tournament and 20 for doubles. Both nights are co-ed and begin at 7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. registration.

The annual tournaments — one is also held each March — have raised more than $260,000 to date, said Norman, who also has held many various other fundraisers over the years for local causes.

He hopes to break $2 million in total fundraising by the restaurant’s 20th anniversary on July 21, 2015.

He chose Red Cross this tournament because it’s anticipating bad weather and hurricanes this year.

Ping pong players are not the only people who can donate.

“Anyone can write a check,” Norman said. “Whatever fires them up.”
