Proposal for distillery in Cumming revived
city

CUMMING — A distillery could be setting up shop in Cumming.

During a meeting Tuesday night, the Cumming City Council voted 5-0 to approve a manufacture and/or distillery license to Spirit of the USA, LLC.

Though the license was granted, it could a while before the distillery is up and running.

“To be upfront, this is a little bit unusual,” said John Coffman with the city’s planning and zoning department. “The city has issued this license before to this particular business.

“It’s a six-month process to apply for [the applicant’s] federal license. And after the six months, when he achieves his federal license, he will be required to attain an appropriate facility to conduct his business subject to planning and zoning.”

According to city officials, the company was approved for the same license in 2013, but did not choose to renew it the following year.

The company needed the local license to apply for a federal one, which Coffman said was required to issue a business license.

According to Coffman, the distillery is planning to set up at 301 Atlanta Road, which is not currently zoned to allow distilleries.
