The National BBQ Cup: Que’n in Cumming opens tonight at the Cumming Fairgrounds, 235 Castleberry Road. Hours are 5 to 9:30 tonight and 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $10 tonight and $5 Saturday; children 10 and younger are free. Tasting tickets for people’s choice events both days are 5 for $5. For more information, visit www.nationalbbqcup.com.

The National BBQ Cup: Que’n in Cumming kicks off tonight and continues through Saturday at the Cumming Fairgrounds.

Organizer Randall Bowman said about 85 professional barbecue teams from all over the country will take part, as well as some 50 “backyard,” or amateur, teams.

The barbecue competition, which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society, runs from 5 to 9:30 tonight and from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday.

Teams will vie for nearly $25,000 in prize money, as well as bragging rights.

Tonight’s festivities include live music from Jody Abernathy and Mark Mundy of Across the Wide with Wendell Cox of the Travis Tritt Band at 7:45 p.m.

Mac Powell of the Christian band Third Day will take the stage at 8:45 p.m.

There will also be a people’s choice tasting event from 6 to 8 p.m. featuring Brunswick stew and chicken wings.

Bowman said about 30 teams will offer samples of Brunswick stew, while another 30 will offer chicken wings.

On Saturday, a pork people’s choice event runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., with about 65 teams taking part.

Visitors can buy people choice tasting tickets for 5 for $5 on Friday and Saturday.

The Cazanovas Blues Band performs at 1 p.m. Saturday, followed by Across the Wide at 3 p.m.  

Both days will also offer a range of vendors and family-friendly games and activities.

Bowman said he’s expecting larger crowds than last year’s debut event, which drew more than 12,000 people.

“It should be a lot bigger than last year,” he said. “On Friday night, the concerts are so much bigger than what we had and there’s also the opportunity to taste food on both Friday and Saturday.

“You’ve also got more vendors and just more opportunity to be interactive with the teams this year than we had last year.”
