CUMMING — A crash early Friday claimed the life of a 28-year-old Alpharetta man at North Old Atlanta Road and Werrington Drive in Cumming.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found a man with critical injuries lying in the road about 3:30 a.m. Friday.

Sheriff’s Cpl. Robin Regan said Jaime Alberto Arias-Montoya was pronounced dead at the scene about 15 minutes later.

Arias-Montoya was reportedly driving on North Old Atlanta from Hwy. 9 at a high rate of speed in a 1996 Toyota 4-Runner, Regan said.

The vehicle left the road in a curve and began to roll. As it did so, Arias-Montoya was thrown from the vehicle.

The 4-Runner sideswiped a large truck as it came to a stop, Regan said. The truck received “minimal damage,” and the driver was released from the scene unharmed.

A crash investigation unit and the coroner’s office responded to the scene. The investigation is ongoing.

Regan said alcohol and speed are the “preliminary causes of the crash” and that charges on the truck driver are unlikely.
