SOUTH FORSYTH - Two people are dead and another is in critical condition after a dump truck and a garbage truck collided at the entrance to Fowler Park in south Forsyth around 2 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Officials on scene said the driver of the dump truck, a male, was airlifted by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital after emergency crews were able to pull him from the truck. He was the vehicle's sole occupant.  Officials on the scene described his condition as critical.

Two people in the garbage truck died on scene, according to Deputy Andrew Ives with the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office's traffic specialist unit (TSU.) TSU responds to serious and fatal wrecks.

"What we've determined so far is the garbage truck was coming [down] off Castleberry Road and the dump truck was heading northbound on Atlanta Highway," Ives said. "They collided, and the garbage truck [overturned.] The driver of the dump truck was flown to a a hospital but was very seriously injured."

The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office closed the road at the intersection and all southbound traffic on Atlanta Highway is being re-routed onto Castleberry Road. All northbound traffic on Atlanta Highway is being re-routed to Fowler Road, and Forsyth County Schools has been notified of the road closure.

It was not immediately known how the wreck occured, nor what company the garbage truck was with, and officials are not releasing any identifying information about the victims until family and friends are notified.
