A Forsyth County man arrested last week in connection with an international child pornography investigation may not be released from federal custody.

Joseph Gittings, 24, of 1930 Chadwick Drive, has been charged with distribution of child pornography.

He was expected to appear Wednesday afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Linda T. Walker.

U.S. Attorney Jill Steinberg said she planned to ask that bond not be set for Gittings.

Dale Hodges, 27, of 114 Old Ferry Way in Roswell, was also arrested Nov. 25 and charged with receiving and possessing child pornography.
Walker denied his bond Monday.

Steinberg said during that hearing, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Special Agent David Westall testified that a confidential source told authorities that in October, Gittings burned images of child pornography onto a DVD.

“During the time the source was in the house, he saw a file on Gittings’ computer labeled ‘Jagdawg,’ which is an online moniker for Dale Hodges,” Steinberg said. “Gittings conveyed to the source that those images were given to Gittings by Dale Hodges.”

Steinberg explained that, according to Westall’s testimony, Hodges had given a digital camera to two boys about 10 years old who took sexually explicit pictures of themselves and gave the camera back to Hodges.

She said the fact that Hodges worked as a tutor at Huntington Learning Center in Alpharetta was part of the argument to keep him in custody.

The case reaches beyond U.S. borders. According to court documents, the arrests were part of an investigation into “a global league of pedophiles.”

Court documents show Gittings was an administrator of an “international online pedophile community known as the Boylover Network,” which Australian authorities have investigated for several years.

Documents also state that Gittings built the server for the Web site and shipped it to the Netherlands “when he thought there was law enforcement interest in the Web site.”

Dutch authorities executed a search warrant Nov. 25 on the location where the server was kept.

Gittings’ live-in boyfriend, Wayne Vernon, was arrested by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and manufacturing marijuana.

A jail spokeswoman said he remains in custody on $165,000 bond.

Hodges’ neighbor, Darrel Demkey, was arrested by Roswell police and charged with child molestation, aggravated sodomy and violation of the child exploitation act.

A Roswell jail spokeswoman said that, because of the felony charges, Demkey was turned over to Fulton County authorities.
