SOUTH FORSYTH — A Cumming man has been charged in connection with a fatal two-vehicle crash on McFarland Parkway and Ga. 400 last week.

Vincent Sams, 53, was arrested today on charges of second-degree vehicular homicide, failure to obey a traffic control device and failure to use due regard while operating a motor vehicle, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred about noon Nov. 17 at McFarland and the entrance ramp to Ga. 400 north.

Franklin Smith, 49, of Gainesville was attempting to turn left onto Ga. 400 from eastbound McFarland in a 2006 Toyota Corolla.

As he made the turn, Sams was reportedly traveling west on McFarland in a 2011 Ford Mustang and struck the passenger side of the Corolla as he entered the intersection.

Evidence at the scene indicated Smith had a green arrow to make the left onto Ga. 400, said Deputy Epifanio Rodriguez, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, at the time.

When sheriff’s deputies arrived, Smith was unresponsive “with an obvious head injury.”

He was taken in critical condition to an area hospital, where he later died, according to the sheriff’s office.

Sams was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

He was booked into the Forsyth County Jail earlier today with a $3,410 bond.

The crash was one of three separate incidents that occurred within three hours of each other on heavily traveled roads in the area. Injuries were reported in one — a single-vehicle crash involving an overturned cement mixer truck that caused the driver to be entrapped in the vehicle for about 30 minutes.

He was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. An update on his condition was not available.
