CANTON -- A Cumming woman faces jail time after pleading guilty to using a government credit card for personal charges while serving as director of elections in neighboring Cherokee County.

Janet Munda, 56, was sentenced this week to eight years, though she likely will serve only the first 30 days in jail, pending her cooperation.

According to Cherokee County Superior Court documents, she will spend the remaining time on probation.

Munda was arrested in early January after a six-month investigation, according to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

She put more than $700 in personal charges on her county-issued credit card from 2011-14, including bills, groceries and clothing.

Cherokee County Superior Court Judge Jackson Harris also imposed a $1,000 fine and $864 in restitution to the county’s board of elections, which Munda must pay by June 16.

After being fired from her position as elections director in July, she pleaded guilty to theft by taking on April 16.
