Forsyth County's most wanted arrested in Mississippi

Authorities in Mississippi have arrested a north Georgia man, who has been wanted in Forsyth County since late July for a hit and run wreck on Canton Highway that caused multiple injuries and killed an unborn child.

Nicolas Alonzo-Ramos, 25, of Canton was arrested on Thursday after an officer with the Mississippi Highway Patrol Traveling Criminal Apprehension Team stopped a Hyundai passenger van along I-20 in Rankin County, Mississippi and identified him with help from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a press release by MHP Capt. John A. Poulos.

At about 3:30 p.m. on July 21, a GMC Envoy SUV lost control while traveling east down Canton Highway and veered into the westbound lane, striking a Honda Pilot SUV, according to previous Forsyth County Sheriff's Office reports.

Alonzo-Ramos is accused of driving the GMC before fleeing the scene with two other suspects.

 A passenger of the GMC, a 26-year-old woman, was eight months pregnant and was rushed to a local hospital. Later, it was reported to the sheriff’s office that the woman’s unborn child was killed due to the violent wreck, local authorities said.

 Authorities later determined that woman was unrelated to Alonzo-Ramos or the other passengers of the GMC, and they believe that the vehicle was being operated as an “unregistered-type car service.”

On Saturday, Forsyth County Sheriff Ron Freeman stated that they are waiting to comment on this case until several questions about Alonzo-Ramos immigration status and other matters are fully investigated. He said that more information will be released in the coming weeks. 

"This is someone that we really cared a lot about getting into custody," Freeman said. 

Alonzo-Ramos is currently being held in the Rankin County Detention Center awaiting extradition to Georgia.
