GAINESVILLE -- A Gainesville man is accused of firing his gun twice Friday during an armed robbery at a Gainesville convenience store.

Eric Kawan Newsome, 37, was charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault, among other charges. He was booked Saturday into the Hall County Jail, where he remains.

Gainesville Police officers responded around 10 a.m. Friday to the Quik Serve on Athens Street in Gainesville.

Police said a man showed the cashier a gun and demanded money, which led to a fight between the two.

“During the altercation, two (shots) were fired by the suspect,” Sgt. Kevin Holbrook wrote in a news release. “Fortunately, the shots did not hit anyone.”

The cashier was injured during the fight, leaving the suspect to escape with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

Officers arrested Newsome Saturday at a home on Triple Creek Bend.

“Investigators conducted a search warrant of the residence on Triple Creek Bend and located a quantity of synthetic marijuana and stolen firearms,” Holbrook said.

Lenny Lorenzo Chatman, 37, and Kamesha Gail Nicely, 36, both of Gainesville, were charged with possession of synthetic marijuana with intent to distribute.
