Gainesville - A Gainesville, Ga., man alerted authorities after he arranged on Craigslist to drive someone to Florida and later learned that someone was a 9-year-old boy.

The man had posted an advertisement on Craiglist offering to split the cost of driving a woman’s son to the Sarasota area.

Shelia Sherrie Joyner of Marietta responded to the ad saying she wanted to send her son to visit his grandmother, according to Cobb County police spokesman Dana Pierce.

She was initially reluctant to tell the man how old her son was. The man who posted the advertisement pressed Joyner to tell him the boy’s age before moving forward with arranging the trip, police said.

Joyner and the would-be driver set a drop-off point at a gas station near Interstate 75 and a detective from the Cobb County Police Crimes Against Children Unit posed as the driver. When a baby sitter arrived with the boy at the drop-off point on Friday she was taken in for questioning, police said.

Joyner had told the baby sitter the man she was to drop her son off with was a close friend, police said. Charges haven’t been filed against the baby sitter, whose identity hasn’t been released.

According to Cobb County jail records, Joyner is charged with contributing to the deprivation of a minor. Her bond has been set at $1,320 and jail records show she’s also being held on more than $5,900 for two counts of failing to appear in court.

Police could not say Tuesday whether the boy was in the custody of relatives and jail records don’t show whether the mother has an attorney.
