Home near Cumming burglarized, burned in suspicious blaze

CUMMING — Authorities are investigating a burglary at a home that was destroyed by a fire Tuesday morning northeast of Cumming.

The doublewide mobile home reportedly had tools stolen from within it, according to Forsyth County Sheriff’s Cpl. Robin Regan.

The sheriff’s office is assisting the fire department in an investigation into the incident, but deferred further comment to fire officials.

Forsyth County Fire Division Chief Jason Shivers said the home on Cherry Drive, which is close to Chattahoochee Elementary School, was “heavily involved” when firefighters arrived a few minutes after the blaze was reported to 911 by neighbors at 7:15 a.m.

The home was not occupied, Shivers said, as it was being renovated for renting by the owner. He apparently had recently acquired it and owns other properties in the area.

Though an official cause and origin have not been determined, the incident is thought to be suspicious in nature, Shivers said.

“There was no power to the building,” he said. “The burglary report is, in fact, likely related to the [fire] investigation.”

Arson has not been officially declared as a cause, and there are no suspects yet.

The property owner is not suspected of being involved in the incident, Shivers said, and has been fully cooperative.

Four engine companies and one ladder truck responded to the scene, as did to two tankers that supplied water because the property was not close enough to a hydrant.
