Authorities say the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old Forsyth County man during an altercation with law enforcement at a Mableton auto shop is under investigation.

According to a Cobb County police report, Matthew R. Murdock died of his injuries about 2 a.m. Friday at Atlanta Medical Center.

Authorities are not releasing the name of the Cobb County police officer or others who were involved.

The report does note that one officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Sgt. Dana Pierce, police department spokesman, declined to say where or how many times Murdock had been shot.

Pierce said the matter is under investigation by the Cobb County Department of Public Safety Internal Affairs Unit and Cobb County Police homicide detectives.

He said Murdock apparently had been working that night at the auto repair business on Puckett Drive.

According to the police report, the incident began about 10:30 p.m. Thursday when a Cobb police officer stopped Murdock as he was leaving the business' parking lot.

The officer was responding to a report of a suspicious person in the area.

When the officer stepped away to confirm some information, the report said, a Cobb County Sheriff’s deputy who had arrived to help “became involved in a physical altercation” with Murdock.

A second officer arrived as Murdock continued to disobey commands.

According to the report, “When it appeared that he was reaching for a weapon, the second Cobb County Police officer shot the male stopping his actions against them.”
