GAINESVILLE — A Gainesville man was arrested Monday night and charged with shooting another man in the parking lot of Lakewood Baptist Church, police said.

Roy Mitchell Peck, 54, faces a charge of aggravated assault. He is accused of shooting John Henry Rogers, 42, in the abdomen Friday.

Gainesville Police Cpl. Jessica Van was not sure of Rogers’ condition at this time.

Police arrived at the church’s rear parking lot off Thompson Bridge Road about 3 p.m. Friday.

A witness said he had seen the two men wrestling on the ground before hearing a single gunshot.

Peck was booked into the Hall County Jail, where he remains.
