A Forsyth County man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting Sunday of his former girlfriend in front of the couple’s two children, authorities said.

Christopher Erdman, 25, faces various charges including murder, aggravated assault and cruelty to children, Milton Police Capt. Shawn McCarty said.

Milton police arrested Erdman in Forsyth County and took him the Fulton County Jail, where he is being held without bond.

McCarty explained that Erdman had arranged to meet his ex- girlfriend, 25-year-old Shannon Lawrence of Canton, at a shopping center Sunday afternoon.

The couple planned to exchange custody of their two children, ages 9 months and 2 years old, McCarty said.

According to McCarty, Erdman shot Lawrence about 2 p.m. in the shopping center parking lot.

"He ended up shooting her four times total," said McCarty, adding that Erdman then put the children inside his truck and Lawrence in the back.

Erdman next drove to his father’s home on Cedar Grove Road in Forsyth County, where he had also been living.

After dropping the children off with his stepmother, Erdman and his father took Lawrence to Northside Hospital-Forsyth, where she was pronounced dead.

McCarty said Milton authorities had received reports from Cherokee County indicating that the couple had a "tumultuous relationship."

"Nobody knows and we will probably never know what sparked him to go off," McCarty said.
