The man who was the subject of a SWAT team standoff Thursday evening in Dahlonega was on probation for an aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer in Forsyth County, according to authorities.

Officers from Lumpkin and Forsyth counties made their first approach around 3 p.m. Thursday to a home on Oak Grove Road in Dahlonega near Oak Grove Baptist Church.

They were there to serve a probation warrant on Hollis Dean Garmon.

“Forsyth County had issues with him in the past. He was on probation actually for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer from an incident in Forsyth County some years ago, where he ended up being shot by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office,” Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Alan Roach said.

Roach said Garmon “made statements that this was not going to end peacefully and he was not going to peacefully go back to jail.”

Garmon pleaded guilty in 2011 to aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of methamphetamine.

He was accused of grabbing a shotgun and pointing it at a Forsyth County sergeant in October 2010 on Keith Bridge Road, according to previous reports in the Forsyth County News.

Roach said Garmon was staying with his girlfriend out in Dahlonega. The lieutenant said the girlfriend was able to exit the single-wide trailer after climbing out a bedroom window.

“An hour later after deployment of gas inside the residence by the Forsyth County SWAT team, he came out without any physical confrontation or anything,” Roach said.

Roach said both Garmon and his girlfriend would face charges, though he was unsure of the specifics.
