Mid-morning traffic near Cumming stop leads to chase, DUI charges
Police

CUMMING — It took Forsyth County Sheriff’s deputies just eight minutes to capture a suspected drunk driver who reportedly fled a traffic stop during the mid-morning Thursday.

As of Friday, Brian Lonzo Samples remained in the Forsyth County Detention Center. There was no bond due to a parole violation, authorities said. He has been charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

While uncommon, deputies occasionally encounter morning DUIs.

“While we do have more DUIs in the evening hours … we can get them at absolutely any part of the day,” said Robin Regan, a spokesman for the agency. “It does not discriminate on what time people will drive while intoxicated.”

Samples’ alleged condition was discovered en route to Northside Hospital-Forsyth. Regan said Samples displayed a condition that “is associated with narcotics being present in the system” and the deputy smelled “an odor of an alcoholic beverage inside the ambulance.”

Samples then told authorities he was a daily vodka drinker and had a quart the previous evening and two “big vodkas” that day.

The traffic stop occurred about 10:50 a.m. on Akins Way near Parks Road, east of Cumming. Samples gave the deputy his name and license before running into the woods and jumping over a creek.

“The driver did not flee the area. He attempted to hide in the overgrown wooded area,” Regan said.

“Approximately eight minutes after the stop was initiated, they took Mr. Samples into custody. He had sustained injuries during the pursuit” and he was taken to the hospital and then jail.

A female passenger who was in the vehicle with Samples did not flee and was not arrested, Regan said.
