Old jail demolished in downtown Cumming

CUMMING — Crews this week razed the former Forsyth County Detention Center in downtown Cumming to make way for a parking lot.

The facility, which dated to the 1970s, was replaced last month when the new Forsyth County Jail opened next door.

The new four-story jail and adjoining courthouse were built with $100 million from the seventh round of the special purpose local option sales tax, or SPLOST VII, which voters approved in 2011.

The jail has a capacity of 608 inmates and more than 100 people work there.
