CUMMING — Sawnee-Cumming Optimist Club member Char Greer congratulates Deputy Rodney Pirkle before he received the group’s Respect for Law Award on Wednesday at the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office headquarters.

Pirkle helped surprise a 71-year-old north Forsyth woman in April by raising nearly $400 in three hours to replace church camp money that had been stolen from her vehicle.

Pirkle handled the case the Saturday before Easter and organized the fundraising effort.

After taking her statement, Pirkle sent a text message to other members of his shift and the county’s dispatch center, asking for donations.

Also during the ceremony Wednesday, Sheriff Duane Piper promoted Scott Boggus from detective to warrants supervisor.
