OAKWOOD — An Oakwood woman is accused of murder in the death of a Flowery Branch woman whose remains were found in October.

Gwinnett County police have charged Amy Leann McGarity, 27, with malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, false imprisonment, concealing the death of another person and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with Kayla Jeanne Nelson’s death.

Nelson, 20, was also known as Kayla Weil.

McGarity was already being held at the Gwinnett County Jail on unrelated charges.

Nelson’s remains were discovered Oct. 24 at Chestnut Ridge Park in Hall County.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office turned over the investigation to Gwinnett County homicide investigators in June.

“During the course of their investigation, it was determined that Kayla was murdered within Gwinnett County,” according to a Gwinnett County police report.

Investigators believe the murder took place at McGarity’s home in Buford.

Citing the ongoing investigation, authorities said no further details will be provided.
