Members of the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Special Operations Response Team recently completed advanced training in West Virginia.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Kenny Hughes explained that the group is designed primarily to respond to major incidents within the Forsyth County Detention Center.
Five members of the team participated in the training, which included seminars and participation in scenarios to teach them how to handle dangerous situations involving inmates.
Hughes explained that in one scenario a chapel was taken over by inmates and an officer was injured.
The deputies then had rescue the officer and regain control of the chapel.
In another exercise, members of the team helped take back control of a jail office that had overrun by inmates.
There are 17 members on the team, Hughes said, and their training includes special weapons, tactics, team movement and close quarters combat.
