Authorities say that an elderly man has been rushed to the hospital after shooting himself on the side of Tribble Gap Road on Thursday afternoon.

According to Cumming Police Chief David Marsh, the man was found by officers sitting against the side of a tree on the side of the roadway, just south of the intersection of Tribble Gap Road and Almon C. Hill Drive.

Marsh said that the man had one gunshot wound but was conscious, alert and breathing when first responders arrived on scene at about 3 p.m.

"All indications are that he tried to take his own life," Marsh said.

Police were on the scene at the incident for nearly an hour but have since cleared the area.

Forsyth Central High School was briefly put on a Code Yellow Lockdown while the incident was investigated, according to Jennifer Caracciolo, director of communications with Forsyth County Schools.
