Looking for something different this Memorial Day weekend? How about a bicycle race.

About 100 cyclists from more than 20 states and several countries will be pedaling their way around the area as part of the second annual Tour of Atlanta.

The four-day competition begins today and runs through Monday.

The event takes place mostly in neighboring Alpharetta and northern Fulton County, but the final stage Monday winds its way in a loop through southwestern Dawson County and northwestern Forsyth, including the Hightower community.

Sponsored by the Alpharetta Convention & Visitors Bureau, the competition is also a Georgia Cup event with a top prize of $15,000.

Georgia Cup, the largest professional-amateur cycling series in the nation, plans to hold about 20 races this year.

Beth Brown, vice president of sales for the bureau, said the event gives “great exposure” to the entire Ga. 400 corridor.

“It’s a very spectator-friendly sport, so we encourage people to come out for the weekend,” she said.

“In keeping with Hospitality Highway ... showcasing all north Fulton has to offer and into Forsyth ... we encourage them to get out in our community.”
