Deadline April 2 for homestead exemption

Forsyth County residents who bought a home in 2011 may be eligible to file for a homestead exemption, which lowers property taxes.

Those who purchased a house in 2011, were living there on Jan. 1 of this year, consider it their primary legal residence and are not claiming homestead at any other location can receive the exemption.

To receive these benefits for 2012, residents must file for an exemption before April 2.

The exemptions are automatically renewed each year unless there is a change in ownership or the resident no longer meets the eligibility requirements.
