WEST FORSYTH — In response to residents’ concerns, the public comment period has been extended for the Georgia Department of Transportation’s effort to improve the Hwy. 20 corridor from Interstate-575 in Canton to Ga. 400 in Cumming.

Comments will be accepted until Oct. 19 via mail, email or MetroQuest, an online submission platform.

The DOT held open houses on Sept. 15 and 17 to present results of its analysis of ways to improve the 24-mile stretch, which has been years in the making.

The Canton meeting drew 420 people to see maps and descriptions of the remaining options. About 480 came to the Cumming session.

The comment deadline was originally Monday. But with Forsyth County Schools being out all of this week for fall break, there was worry that some residents wouldn’t have a chance to be part of the process, according to Teri Pope, a DOT spokeswoman.

The department wants input on the two final strategies: widening the existing route or expanding the road while also constructing localized bypasses around more heavily developed segments.

Under that scenario, the Cumming segment has five options for where the bypass would be built, as this area is the most dense and heavily populated expanse along the route.

Highway 20, a major east-west thoroughfare for the northern edge of metro Atlanta, has long been associated with “congestion, limited mobility and safety issues.”

The proposed improvement process began in 2007, when the DOT announced a plan to widen Hwy. 20 that included three separate projects that would begin as federal funding became available.

Six years later, that approach was scrapped in favor of a single, regional project spanning the 24-mile stretch.

This round of open houses was the third on the issue since 2013.

Officials have said construction could start in 2022, when designs targeting growth projections for 2045.

After deeper examination, alternatives will continue to be narrowed and brought back to the community for feedback and presented in a Draft Environmental Impact Statement.
