President Barack Obama celebrates his 50th birthday today, but the real party will happen Saturday.

Democrats across the country are holding birthday bashes for the president, including one in downtown Cumming.

"The Democratic Party, both statewide and nationally, were suggesting that local parties commemorate this day in some way, and we thought what better way than to have a party celebrating community, camaraderie and unity," said Sharon Gunter, chair of the Forsyth County Democratic Party.

The local event will run from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the Cumming Fairgrounds parking lot at the corner of Castleberry Road and Maple Street.

The Presidential Block Party, which is open to the public, will feature live entertainment, as well as tasty treats provided by Cinda’s Ice Cream Social.

The restaurant will be selling cupcakes, politically-themed ice cream and blue cotton candy. Guests can also bring their own food and lawn chairs.

"Whether or not people are supportive of the president, they should be respectful of the position and the office," Gunter said. "We want everybody and anybody … to know that they are welcome and to come out and enjoy and celebrate with us.

"We’re just going to be having a great time."
