Forsyth County’s newest grocery shopping center is set to break ground next month.
The Publix at Matt shopping center will break ground on April 11 at the corner of Bannister Road and Matt Highway, according to a press release by Retail Planning Corporation, the site’s developers.
The 48,500-square-foot Publix store, which is scheduled to open in summer of 2020, will anchor an 82,000-square-foot retail plaza that will feature a mix of restaurants and other businesses. Current businesses signed on to lease at the plaza include Great Clips, Nail Talk & Tan, J. Christopher’s and AT&T, officials said.
Developers are also targeting beauty and health services, shipping facilities, financial services, children’s daycare and fast casual and fast food restaurants, officials said.
At a town hall meeting in October, officials with Atlanta-based Retail Planning Corporation called the planned Publix a new “prototype” store. It will feature fresh, all-natural and traditional products, as well as a drive-through pharmacy window, officials said.
The property had been targeted for a grocery store by Retail Planning Corporation since 2004, but it wasn’t until November of 2018 that the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a rezoning of the land to pave the way for the development.
Other work is in store for the area, too. A residential subdivision by Ashton Woods is planned for 94 acres near the retail plaza. The two developments will be connected by 10-foot sidewalks. And additional lanes will be added to Bannister Road and Matt Highway.
