Authorities have released the names of the two drivers who were killed in a head-on wreck Tuesday morning in north Forsyth.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, 29-year-old Valerie Jean Martin of Cumming and Shane Michael Thurmond, 42, of Dawsonville, died after the collision on Hwy. 53 near Porter Lane.

The wreck occurred about 9 a.m. Tuesday when a 1994 BMW driven by Thurmond crossed the highway and struck a 1991 Honda Civic.

Martin was driving the Honda. Neither vehicle had any passengers, according to authorities.

The Georgia State Patrol is handling the investigation of the crash, which shut down the corridor for some time.

Also still being investigated is a three-vehicle wreck that happened about 10:15 a.m. Tuesday on Hwy. 20 near Windermere Parkway in southeastern Forsyth.

According to the sheriff’s office, four people were taken to the hospital with what were described as non-life-threatening injuries after a sport utility vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and was struck by two cars.

Authorities have said the Kia driver may have had a medical issue that caused him to swerve across traffic.

The drivers of each vehicle and one passenger in the SUV were taken to the hospital. Their names have not been released.

The deaths Tuesday morning on Hwy. 53 were the second and third on county roads in less than a week.

On March 7, a 43-year-old woman died after a three-vehicle collision involving a school bus and a truck at Hwy. 9 and North Old Atlanta and Hutchinson roads, south of the Cumming.
