Assistant principal on leave after arrest

FORSYTH COUNTY — A Matt Elementary School assistant principal is out on bond after being arrested on charges of violating the controlled substance act.

According to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Rene Westray was released from the Forsyth County Detention Center after posting an $11,110 bond on March 21.

Westray turned herself in to authorities that day following an investigation that she had “obtained a forged prescription at the Kroger located at Canton Highway and Bethelview Road,” according to a sheriff’s report.

The investigation began after an incident March 7. According to the sheriff’s office, Westray was at Northside Hospital’s Pain Center in Atlanta, where staff alerted an off-duty Sandy Springs police detective to a suspected forgery. The officer, in turn, contacted the Forsyth County Sheriff’s narcotics unit.

Sheriff’s Detective J.D. Roe said a complaint was filed by personnel at the Northside center.

“The information that we got was that it was a blank prescription that she utilized and basically traced over,” he said.

According to Roe, the prescription was for 90, 10-milligram methadone pills, which was not unusual, but “it was the date that it was reportedly issued for that raised the initial concerns.”

“They had determined that this prescription had been [filled],” Roe said. “It was their prescription, but there was no medical record to back it up. They presented it to the doctor, the doctor signed a forgery affidavit ... and when they confronted [Westray], she ultimately admitted to it.”

The local investigation concluded March 21, with a warrant being issued for Westray’s arrest.

Jennifer Caracciolo, a spokeswoman for the school system, said that Westray began “medical leave for the remainder of the school year” on March 19.

“We are not issuing additional comments,” Caracciolo said.

According to the school system, Westray had been employed by the district since 1989 and had served as assistant principal at Matt since 2005. She previously was an assistant principal at Chattahoochee and Vickery Creek elementary schools.
