OAKWOOD — Zachary Swansey, former boys’ basketball coach at West Hall High School, was arrested Wednesday night on a charge of sexual assault to a student.

Swansey was charged after an investigation by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.  West Hall High School administrators made a complaint to the sheriff Monday after the school’s investigation about an inappropriate relationship between a teacher and a student.

A press release from the sheriff’s office states that investigators learned that Swansey, 27, had engaged in a consensual, sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl at the school.

Because of Swansey’s capacity as a teacher, the warrant was obtained.

Swansey was arrested at his Flowery Branch home without incident and taken to the Hall County Jail, where he remains without bond.

He is expected to go before a magistrate judge at 2 p.m. today.

A statement from the school district said school administrators investigated rumors about a relationship between Swansey and a girl, and he was told he would be fired.

He submitted a letter of resignation before leaving the school Monday.

Swansey was the head boys’ basketball coach for one year. He was an online learning teacher and also supervised in-school suspension at times.
