Sixteen staff members, family and friends from Silver City Elementary School recently traveled to Port St. Joe, Fla., where they volunteered to give 12 special families a week to remember.
The effort was through the Blue Skies organization, which provides weeklong retreats for families battling pediatric cancer.
The mission of Blue Skies is accomplished through games, activities, meals, beach time and lots of laughter.
The hope is that children who are sick will laugh and play again and that their siblings, who often must compete with illness, will feel cherished and valued. In addition, the effort aims to renew and strengthen marriages and families.
The joyous week at Wind Mark Beach Resort was filled with fun, helping forge lifelong friendships between guests and volunteers.
“As a volunteer, serving the families at Blue Skies is a life-changing opportunity to remember that life is precious and our blessings are many,” said Amy Rodriguez, a Silver City teacher.
In addition to Rodriguez, those taking part in the trip included: Jennifer Berg, Megan Edel, Leslie Hamilton, Daniel Rodriguez, Savannah Sipsy, Vicky Sipsy, Mason Waters, Bill Wortman, Joe Wortman, Luke Wortman, Sha Wortman, Stephen Wortman, Hailey Yarbrough, Shelby Yarbrough and Wendy Yarbrough.
