Lambert High School won the top category at 11th annual Georgia High Schools Musical Theatre Awards-Shuler Hensley Awards ceremony on April 18 for best overall production for its production of ‘Newsies.’
Lambert also won for best choreography (Carly Ann Berg, Caroline Cannizzaro, Maddie Crews, Jenna Wagner) and best ensemble during the live televised awards ceremony at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre that is modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards and presented by the ArtsBridge Foundation, a Georgia-based nonprofit that provides arts education and community programs.
The Shuler Hensley Awards was named for the Atlanta-born Broadway performer and recognizes the best of the state’s high school musical theater students and schools. A team of more than 60 Georgia-based arts professionals evaluated nominees from nearly 60 public and private schools in 17 categories.
Lambert’s production of ‘Newsies’ had earned nine nominations in all, including for best direction, best technical execution, best performance by a leading actor, best performance by a supporting actor, best performance by a featured performer.
West Forsyth had earned two nominations for its production of ‘Hello, Dolly!’ and an honorable mention. Denmark and North also received an honorable mention apiece for productions of ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ and ‘The Pajama Game,’ respectively.
