The Adult Learning Center at Lanier Technical College's Forsyth County campus is holding registration for English as a Second Language and GED classes in the weeks ahead.

ESL registration is set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday in room A237. Assessment and orientation will take about two hours.

GED class registration will be held from noon to 5 p.m.  Sept. 21, also in room A237.

The Adult Learning Center has helped hundreds of residents receive their GED. Last year, about 190 Forsyth residents earned their GED through the program.

The center offers classes to help students prepare for each GED exam area -- writing, social studies, science, reading and math -- as well as practice tests.

During registration, a person's skill levels in each area are determined and an appropriate course of study is determined.

Once ready, students register to take the GED.

Students age 20 and older need a state or federal-issued photo ID and a money order for $95 to take the test.

Students ages 16-19 need additional document, though those under 18 are encouraged to stay in their traditional high school programs.

After passing the GED, students earn a $500 voucher through Georgia's HOPE scholarship program, which can be used for classes at Lanier Tech or other post-secondary schools.
