FORSYTH COUNTY — A fundraiser Saturday will feature the popular word game Scrabble while promoting literacy in Forsyth County.
Literacy Forsyth provides about 800 local adults with tutoring and GED and English courses each year.
“We have two types of tutoring,” said Annaliza Thomas, executive director of the nonprofit. “We have tutors who help in the classroom with teacher support and we have folks who work with individual tutors, and that happens at libraries. That’s one-on-one tutoring with individuals who are improving their reading and writing level.”
The literacy group has been holding Scrabble competitions twice a year for the past two years. This year’s summer event is set for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Lanier Tech Conference Center, 3410 Ronald Reagan Blvd.
Participants, who must be at least 12, can play two games of Scrabble and eat lunch for a donation of $15. The proceeds will go toward scholarships for GED exam fees.
Those attending can compete alone or with a partner. Prizes will include gift certificates to local businesses.
Registration is at literacyforsyth.com. Participants can also register the at the door.
