Ramie Orth got a jumpstart on registering her future kindergartner this week.

While the Forsyth County school system will hold its annual kindergarten roundup on Thursday and Friday, Orth said she came to the Almon C. Hill Center on Monday because it was more convenient.

Orth and her family, including 4-year-old Hailey, moved back to Forsyth County last week after living nine months in California.

She said her first-grader, Hunter, would return Tuesday to Daves Creek Elementary, where he attended kindergarten last year.

Orth said she isn’t as nervous about sending Hailey to school for the first time as she was with Hunter.

“She’s the second, so it’s easier,” she said. “You don’t know how it’s going to work with the first one.”

Thursday and Friday, parents will be able to register children who turn 5 before Sept. 1 for kindergarten at the school they will attend.

Registrar Debbie Holland said the district is expecting the annual kindergarten registration to go smoothly.

“We had training last week at the county office and everybody is ready to go,” she said.

Holland said parents should remember to bring all their paperwork, including two proofs of residency, and make sure immunizations are current.

Other required documents include a copy of the child’s birth certificate, a Social Security card and proof that the child has had an ear, eye and dental exam in the past year.

The roundup is scheduled from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.

Students who will attend the new Brookwood Elementary may be registered at Big Creek, Sharon or Johns Creek elementary schools.

Those slated for Haw Creek, which also will open in August, may be registered at Mashburn, Daves Creek or Settles Bridge elementary schools.

For those who will attend the county’s third new elementary, Whitlow, registration is at Cumming, Vickery Creek or Shiloh Point elementary schools.

Parents may schedule appointments with the registration office by calling (678) 947-0863.

Parents unable to attend the roundup registration days can also register their students at the Hill Center. New students entering grades other than kindergarten next year must be registered through the Hill Center.
