ATLANTA — The Department of Driver Services is reminding students who want to test for an instructional permit or driver's license over summer break to get a certificate of attendance form from their school administration.
Students planning for an on-the-road test will also need a certificate of completion from a Georgia Alcohol Drug Awareness Program.
Attendance certificate forms must be signed and notarized from the student's school and presented when they apply for a permit or Class D driver's license.
Typically, the form is valid for a month. However, those issued this month will be accepted until Sept. 30.
All applicants younger than 18 not enrolled in school must provide a GED or high school diploma or, if enrolled in an approved home school program, an attendance form from their local school board.
Like the certificate of attendance, successful completion of the alcohol and drug awareness program is required for a permit.
An Internet option, eADAP, is available to students who are home-schooled, have moved to Georgia from another state, were absent from school when the course was taught or who need it during the summer months.
The program is typically taught in both public and private schools as part of the ninth-grade health curriculum.
New homeland security requirements also apply to those obtaining their first Georgia driver's license, permit or ID card.
Teenage customers can expect to present documentation to establish identity, including a legal name change, citizenship or lawful presence in the United States, a Social Security number, and two documents to prove their residential address.
For residency, most students may present a letter from their school plus a parent's valid license/ID that has the same address.
