The Forsyth County school system’s upcoming long weekend — students will be off Friday, Monday and Tuesday — was no accident.

"By placing a professional development day alongside a student holiday and inclement weather day, we are being responsive to the parent feedback we received on the school calendar which requested a short winter break," said Jennifer Caracciolo, system spokeswoman.

Teachers must report to work Friday, a professional development day.

On Monday, both teachers and students will be off for President’s Day. The same goes for Tuesday, which was a scheduled inclement weather day that wasn’t needed.

"In the 2011-12 calendar, there are three inclement weather days scattered among a three-month period," Caracciolo said.

"Since we have been fortunate to not experience inclement weather, forcing us to close school for a day, Tuesday will be a day off for students and staff."

During the professional development day, teachers will gather for Engage ME, to share information with a focus on content.

They will have common core training, literacy design collaborative sessions and various assignments at each grade level.
