Two high school seniors could receive a college scholarship in the memory of Wendy Murphy, the late wife of District 27 state Sen. Jack Murphy.

Specifically, the scholarship caters to those students seeking studio art as a major at a two- to four-year accredited college or art institute.

The scholarship provides two students with $3,000 each in academic funding over a two-year period as long as the recipient remains enrolled as a full-time student.

The deadline to apply is Feb. 27

Murphy, who is the chairman of the scholarship committee, said the Wendy Murphy Young Artists Memorial Scholarship is dedicated to helping "young people who are finding their way."

Candidates for the award must be seniors who have attended Forsyth Central or North, South or West Forsyth, a private school or have been home schooled and lived in Forsyth County at least two years.

The scholarship is for students who want to study studio art, including those interested in sculpture, drawing, painting, hand-thrown potter, photography and/or fiber art.

"[Wendy's] happiness and joyful spirit will live on through the students we hope to help," Murphy said.

The scholarship can offset expenses not covered by other scholarships and grants. Applications are available at all high schools and home school organizations.
