Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation will again award several scholarships to eligible high school seniors.

Applications are being accepted and the deadline is 5 p.m. Jan. 20.

According to a news release from Sawnee EMC, scholarships will be awarded to students from throughout its territory, which includes parts of Cherokee, Dawson, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Hall and Lumpkin counties.

To be eligible, a student must be a current high school senior whose permanent residence is served by Sawnee.

The amount and number of scholarships awarded varies each year and is set by the Sawnee Foundation Board.

For the past two years, each scholarship has been $3,500. This year’s award amount will be set in the spring.

Funding for the scholarships comes from Sawnee’s Operation Round-Up program, through which members can volunteer to "round up" their monthly bills to the next highest dollar amount. The extra cents go to the foundation.

Since the program began in 2006, more than $164,000 in scholarship money has been awarded to 51 students.
