FORSYTH COUNTY — The Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests begin today for the Forsyth County school system.

The Georgia-mandated assessments evaluate a student’s annual progress during the school year in relation to state standards.

“Children should employ good test-taking skills, such as following directions carefully and reviewing their work,” said Jennifer Caracciolo, spokeswoman for the system.

“In preparation for the tests, early bed times, nutritious breakfasts and arriving on time to school are encouraged.”

Today, students from third through eighth grades will take the reading portion of the CRCT.

Thursday’s test will be language arts, followed by math on Monday, science April 22 and social studies April 23.

“Each content area test has two sections that last approximately 70 minutes each,” Caracciolo said. “To be promoted from third grade, students must perform at grade level or higher on the reading CRCT, while for fifth and eighth grade promotion, students must perform at grade levels or higher on both the math and reading CRCTs.”

Testing was pushed back about a week this school year to ensure teachers and students had adequate time to prepare following several lost days dues to winter weather.

“Historically, Forsyth County Schools’ students have performed at extremely high levels on the CRCT, many times leading the state in specific subject areas,” Caracciolo said.

Make-up testing for certain subjects and grade levels will be held in May, following end-of-course testing at the high school level, which runs from May 1 to 15.

Advanced Placement exams are scheduled for May 5-16.
