For its work in the areas of leadership, service and activities in the community, West Forsyth High School's student council recently was honored by the National Association of Student Councils.

West Forsyth was one of 118 high schools nationwide to be named a National Gold Council of Excellence by the organization.

The group promotes leadership development to prepare students to serve their communities.

To receive the award, a student council must meet a variety of criteria, including leadership training for council members, student recognition programs and teacher and staff appreciation activities.

Also factored in are school and community service projects, spirit activities, financial planning and participation in state and national student council associations.

West Forsyth Principal Richard Gill is sold on the program at the school, which opened in 2007.

The achievement, he said, is "recognition of the outstanding work that the student government has performed in our short history at West Forsyth."

"This honor is a source of pride for our students, faculty and community," Gill said.
