Twenty two students from Forsyth County high schools have been selected as finalists for the Georgia Governor’s Honors Program.
“We commend these 22 students on this significant accomplishment,” said Forsyth County Superintendent Buster Evans. “Very few students are of the caliber to reach this level of distinction, and we know that they will represent Forsyth County Schools well.”
The program is a residential summer offering for gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. Offered through the state Department of Education, it takes place on the Valdosta State University campus.
This summer marks the 49th year, making it the longest continually running program of its kind in the nation.
Forsyth’s students were selected from more than 2,900 from across the state that interviewed and auditioned over three weekends in January and February.
From those 2,900 nominees, 690 finalists were selected.
Students will arrive June 24 at the Valdosta campus and for four weeks, will spend the morning in their major area of nomination, exploring topics not usually found in the regular high school classroom.
During the afternoons, students choose one of the other areas in which to study.
The curriculum is designed to be challenging and engaging. Evenings are filled with seminars, activities, concerts and performances.
