A volunteer at the Forsyth County Family YMCA has been named the best of the best in the area.

Melody Richardson of Cumming will receive the YMCA of Metro Atlanta’s 2012 Volunteer of the Year award during an annual recognition dinner Nov. 12.

Kevin Thompson, executive director of local YMCA, congratulated Richardson, who has served the organization for three years in its after-school program.

“Melody has a special way of working with children,” he said in a statement. “She’s always thinking of new ideas for our after-school enrichment program and the children benefit greatly from her efforts.

“She certainly deserves to be the volunteer of the year.”

Through the program, Richardson assists children with activities such as reading and homework.

In a statement, Richardson said she enjoys working with the children in the program.

“There is nothing more gratifying than giving your time to children,” she said. “To see the children grow within a year is wonderful to behold.

“The Y provides a great opportunity to do that, and truly helps kids reach their full potential.”

Besides her time at the YMCA, Richardson also organizes family science nights for local elementary schools and volunteers at Sexton Hall Enrichment Center’s computer lab.
